Fonts for Twitter and X

X renders Unicode in names and bios, but the timeline is small, dense text — most styles lose there.

A few styles can show as empty boxes on some phones or apps, so check after pasting. Screen readers may read these styles poorly, so use them for flair and not for important info like links or phone numbers.

Where it is allowed

The display name and the bio accept Unicode characters, and so do posts and replies. The handle does not: it is restricted to letters, numbers and underscores, and it is permanent enough that styling it would be pointless anyway.

Direct messages and polls are ordinary text fields, so they accept the characters too — though a poll option in script is a good way to lose votes.

Why the timeline punishes decoration

X compresses text: names are truncated in replies, quotes and embed cards, and posts are scanned rather than read. A name in bold holds up because weight survives compression. A name in script or fraktur turns into a grey smear at 13px in a quote tweet, and spaced-out letters get cut mid-word by the truncation.

If the account is a brand, the most useful place for a style is not the name at all — it is a single emphasised word in the pinned post, where somebody is actually reading.

The search rule that matters most

Search on X matches characters. A display name written entirely in styled characters cannot be found by typing the normal spelling, and hashtags made of styled letters join no tag page at all. Since discovery on X is heavily search and quote-driven, a fully styled name quietly removes you from both.

Keep the plain spelling in the name, the bio or the handle, and style around it.

Threads, quotes and embeds

When somebody quotes you, your name is rendered at a small size with tight truncation. That is the real test of a styled name, not your own profile view. Paste the name into a reply, look at it on a phone, and decide whether it still reads — that is the version most people will see.

Questions people ask about fonts for twitter and x

Can I use fancy text in an X username?

No. The handle only allows letters, numbers and underscores. Styled characters work in the display name, bio and posts.

Will styled text break hashtags on X?

Yes. A hashtag made of styled characters is a different string and will not join the tag people browse or search.

Does styled text affect search on X?

It removes you from matching the plain spelling. Search matches characters, so a fully styled name cannot be found by typing the normal letters.

Which style reads best on X?

Bold sans, bold serif or small caps. All three survive the small sizes used in replies, quotes and embeds.

Are character limits counted differently with styled text?

Each styled character counts as one, but combining-mark styles like strikethrough add an extra character per letter and eat the limit faster.
