The shortcuts you should be using instead
Inside a WhatsApp message you can format text without any generator: wrap a word in asterisks for bold, underscores for italic, tildes for strikethrough and three backticks for monospace. Those are real formatting, they cost no extra characters, they work on every device, and they do not confuse screen readers.
So why use Unicode at all? Because the shortcuts only work in message bodies. Your profile name, a group name and a broadcast list title are plain fields with no formatting at all, and that is where pasted characters are the only option.
Fields that accept styled text
Display name, group subject and status text all accept Unicode. Your phone number, obviously, does not, and neither does the contact name someone else saves you under — that lives on their device, in their language, in their font.
Groups are where decoration causes the most friction: a group name is shown in a narrow header and in every notification, so a script or fraktur name gets truncated or rendered as boxes on older phones. Bold sans and small caps survive; decorative frames usually do not.
Status: the one place it is worth it
A status is a full-screen card, seen for a few seconds, by people who already know you. That is the right context for one styled line — small caps for a quiet quote, a symbol frame around a short phrase. Keep it to a single line and keep the actual message plain, because status text is also read aloud by accessibility tools.
What not to do
Do not style your display name into something unsearchable. WhatsApp search matches characters, so a name written entirely in script will not appear when a colleague types your normal name. And do not paste struck or underlined text into a message where the line carries meaning — on WhatsApp, unlike a caption, people assume formatting is deliberate, and a struck-out address or time reads as a correction.
Questions people ask about fonts for whatsapp
Does WhatsApp have a font setting?
No. Message text uses one font. You can format words with asterisks, underscores, tildes and backticks, and you can paste Unicode characters for everything else.
How do I make bold text in WhatsApp?
Put an asterisk on each side of the word, like *this*. Italic is _this_, strikethrough is ~this~ and monospace is three backticks. These are built in and cost no extra characters.
Can I use fancy text in my WhatsApp name?
Yes, the profile name accepts Unicode. Keep at least one plain word so people can still find you in search.
Why does my styled name show boxes on some phones?
The other person’s phone font does not include those characters. Sticking to bold sans or small caps reduces the risk.
Will the formatting shortcuts work in a group name?
No. Asterisks, underscores and tildes are only interpreted inside messages; group names are plain text.
